You would think climbing stairs wouldn’t be such a fitness challenge! I figured after working out at the Swallow Cliff stairs last month, I would try something closer to home. And, I thought going up and down my high school bleachers would be a light workout. I couldn’t be more wrong.

I don’t think there is a piece of gym equipment that works my legs and butt like climbing stairs. My legs hurt for 3 days after two rounds of stairs at Swallow Cliff. Since then, I have worked out on a treadmill, bike, and machine. But after today, I can tell my legs are going to be sore for another 3 days!

I started with some lunges on the bleachers which was a great warm up. I climbed the stairs two times in a row before taking a break to rest and drink water. This was followed by another two climbs. It may seem like a quick workout, but that last set of stairs was pretty tough to finish. I was definitely slowing down.

I read some great articles about how you can do entire workout at your local school stadium. After climbing stairs, you can do squats and burpees. Plus, the track is perfect for either a cardio sprint or cool down walk.

Stair workouts are pretty challenging. If you are just starting to exercise, you might want to take it slow or do less stairs. I think that is actually what is great about this workout. If you are a beginner you can take it slow. If you are advanced, you can do more repetitions, climb 2 stairs at a time, or even run them.

Many high schools and colleges have stairs that are open to the public if you are interested in taking your next workout to the bleachers!
